What does the car interior of 2030 look like? According to Renault’s Futurama innovation laboratory, it looks less like a traditional cockpit and much more like an intuitive, sun-drenched lounge. Enter the Renault R-Space Lab, a breathtaking innovation demonstrator designed to reinvent the brand’s iconic “voitures à vivre” (cars for living) philosophy.
While it won’t hit the assembly line exactly as presented, the R-Space Lab is a crystal-clear illustration of Renault’s future DNA, blending human-centered technology with radical modularity.

A Human-Centered, AI-Enhanced Cockpit
In the R-Space Lab, technology is deployed strictly to deliver real, tangible value to the occupants. The traditional dashboard is replaced by a sweeping, curved openR panorama screen that spans the entire width of the cabin. From a central touchscreen, drivers can manage the car’s main functions as fluidly as operating a smartphone.
The driving experience is further modernized by a compact steering wheel utilizing steer-by-wire technology, which significantly opens up the driver’s field of vision. Renault’s “human first” program also introduces pioneering safety concepts, including:
- Tactile Alcohol Detectors: Designed to educate and support younger drivers.
- In-Car Artificial Intelligence: An advanced system capable of enhancing the Safety Coach with personalized recommendations, acting as a navigational guide, or serving as an active driving assistant.
The Ultimate Modular Lounge
Measuring 4.5 meters long and 1.5 meters tall, this one-box vehicle boasts flowing lines that conceal a remarkably adaptable interior. To maximize space, Renault moved the front and curtain airbags directly into the passenger seat. This brilliant engineering feat frees up the dashboard entirely, allowing for a multifunction glovebox that can hold a tablet or fold completely out into a leg rest for ultimate relaxation.

The seating configurations are designed to adapt to almost any everyday scenario:
- The front passenger seat can slide all the way back to the second row, making it effortless to interact with rear passengers or tend to a child.
- The rear features three individual seats of identical width, complete with reclining backrests.
- Need to haul gear? The seats can slide all the way to the front to accommodate a bicycle, or the seat cushions can flip up entirely to carry bulky items or pets on the flat floor plan.
- Access is a breeze thanks to rear doors that open to a full 90-degree angle.
Bathed in Natural Light
To ensure the cabin feels as expansive as possible, the R-Space Lab is heavily glazed. By combining an extended windscreen, a fully glazed roof, ultra-slim pillars, a half B-pillar, and frameless doors, the interior is perpetually bathed in natural light. It is a bright, open space that fundamentally blurs the lines between the vehicle’s interior and the outside world, setting a luxurious new standard for the daily commute.
