Lamborghini Urus SE: Setting New Standards in Hybrid Super SUVs

Automobili Lamborghini charts a new course in its illustrious journey with the debut of the Urus SE, the premier hybrid plug-in model of the Lamborghini Super SUV. Unveiled at the Volkswagen Group Media Night ahead of its public debut at Auto China Beijing 2024 on April 25th at 11 AM local time, this groundbreaking vehicle boasts a fresh design, enhanced aerodynamics, unparalleled onboard technology, and an 800 CV hybrid powertrain. Surpassing its predecessor, the Urus S, in terms of comfort, performance, efficiency, emissions, and driving satisfaction, the PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) variant marks a significant advancement. With its dual “thermal and electric” power sources, the Urus SE achieves its highest torque and power values to date, securing its distinctive position within its category and proudly showcasing an 80% reduction in emissions.

A Driving Experience Like No Other

The Lamborghini Urus SE delivers an incomparable driving experience, enhanced by its plug-in hybrid system. This system elevates the vehicle’s performance and dynamics across all terrains and conditions, providing greater torque and power at any RPM. Innovative technical solutions, including the electric torque vectoring system between the two axles and the electronic rear differential, contribute to this remarkable capability.

“The underlying mission of the project was clear: to offer state-of-the-art performance combined with the uncompromising character typical of Lamborghini’s DNA,” commented Chief Technical Officer, Dr. Ing. Rouven Mohr. “The Urus SE is positioned at the top of its class in terms of being fun to drive and for its driving dynamics. It’s a vehicle that harmoniously combines different qualities: absolute comfort and at the same time performance and fun-to-drive, ensuring an experience like no other.”

The twin-turbo 4.0 V8 engine has undergone extensive re-engineering to seamlessly integrate with the electric powertrain. It generates 620 CV of power (456 kW) and 800 Nm of driving torque, while the electric powertrain contributes an additional 192 CV (141 kW) and 483 Nm of torque. Achieving peak performance has centered around finely tuning the calibration strategy between the internal combustion engine (ICE) and the electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 800 CV to ensure optimal power delivery across all driving modes and surfaces. Positioned beneath the load floor and above the electronically-controlled rear differential is a 25.9-kWh lithium-ion battery.

The permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor housed within the 8-speed automatic transmission serves both as a power boost for the V8 engine and as a traction component, enabling the Urus SE to operate as a 100% electric 4WD vehicle capable of traveling over 60 km in EV mode.

A notable addition to the Lamborghini Urus SE is the innovative centrally-located longitudinal electric torque vectoring system, featuring an electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutch. This system dynamically distributes driving torque between the front and rear axles, ensuring seamless adaptability to varying driving conditions. Collaborating with the new electronic limited-slip differential on the rear axle, this setup provides the Urus SE with responsive “on-demand” oversteering characteristics reminiscent of a purebred super sports car.

Both systems are meticulously designed and calibrated to excel across diverse grip conditions and driving styles, offering maximum traction and agility whether navigating a racetrack or conquering desert dunes, icy terrain, or rugged dirt trails.

Setting a New Standard in Performance

The Lamborghini Urus SE stands out in its category by delivering superior torque and power across all RPM ranges and driving conditions. With a total power output of 800 CV (588 kW) at 6000 rpm and a total torque of 950 Nm available from as low as 1750 rpm up to 5750 rpm, it ensures unparalleled performance from every perspective. This exceptional capability is further amplified by an enhanced weight-to-power ratio, now at 3.13 kg/CV (compared to 3.3 in the Urus S). Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds (compared to Urus S: 3.5) and from 0 to 200 km/h in a mere 11.2 seconds (compared to Urus S: 12.5), the Urus SE achieves a top speed of 312 km/h (compared to Urus S: 305 km/h). These impressive figures not only establish the SE as the most potent Urus to date but also as the fastest production car in its segment, setting a new benchmark in the Super SUV category.

Redefined Design and Enhanced Aerodynamics

The Urus SE transforms the established stylistic norms of SUV design, while simultaneously refining its lines to maximize aerodynamic efficiency.

Its design accentuates the vehicle’s athleticism and robustness, with the front section boasting a redesigned hood featuring a sleek floating design that fosters a sense of seamless continuity and amplifies the Urus SE’s sporty demeanor. Noteworthy updates include the incorporation of headlight clusters equipped with matrix LED technology, introducing a distinctive light signature inspired by the Lamborghini brand’s iconic bull motif. The redesigned bumper and front grille further enhance the vehicle’s dynamic appeal.

The design and proportions of the Urus remain incomparable and absolutely recognizable as a Lamborghini,” stated Lamborghini Design Director Mitja Borkert. “At the same time the Urus SE delivers a highly sophisticated evolution, consistent with our new iconic and essential design philosophy, and importantly delivering an enhanced feeling of luxury together with more Ad Personam potential. We took inspiration from the Revuelto with the floating engine bonnet, achieving a very clean and muscular front design. The state-of-the art front light system integrates a new, distinctive DRL signature. The rear emphasizes a wider stance with a focus on the new diffuser and low-mounted license plates, while the rear mesh takes inspiration from Lamborghini super sports cars like the Gallardo. The interior design follows our ‘feel like a pilot’ philosophy, enhancing interaction between the driver and the digital system.”

At the rear, the cargo compartment hatch undergoes a complete redesign, introducing a seamless connection between the taillight clusters and the new rear diffuser, inspired by the design language of the Gallardo. Complemented by the addition of a new spoiler, the diffuser significantly enhances rear downforce by 35% at high speeds compared to the Urus S, bolstering the vehicle’s stability.

Enhanced aerodynamic efficiency is achieved through the incorporation of new under-body air vents and revised air ducts, which facilitate increased airflow to cool the mechanical and engine components, marking a 15% improvement over the original Urus. Additionally, the redesigned front section, coupled with optimized aerodynamics underneath, enhances the management of airflow dedicated to the braking system, resulting in a 30% enhancement in air cooling compared to the previous configuration.

Interior Enhancements

The cabin of the Urus SE receives a comprehensive update, embodying Lamborghini’s iconic “feel like a pilot” design ethos with innovative solutions that enhance the lightweight sensation first introduced in the Revuelto.

At the forefront of the updates is a larger 12.3-inch screen centrally located on the dashboard, showcasing a revamped version of the Human Machine Interface (HMI) with updated graphics for enhanced user experience, in line with the design language of the Revuelto. Lamborghini Centro Stile designers have meticulously crafted details such as the air vents, anodized aluminum trim elements featuring the distinctive Y shape, and refreshed panel, seat, and dashboard coverings. The addition of a mechanical pushbutton panel enhances tactile feedback for the driver.

The driver benefits from a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and the aforementioned 12.3-inch touchscreen display, seamlessly integrated into the dashboard as the centerpiece of the Lamborghini Infotainment System (LIS). This setup also includes a dedicated telemetry system tailored for the SE, along with new displays related to the driving assistance system, providing enhanced awareness of the surrounding environment.

Personalization

The Urus SE stands out in its category with an unparalleled array of customization options. The alloy wheels receive an update with the introduction of 23” Galanthus rims, paired as standard with new Pirelli P Zero tires. Customers have a choice of three dedicated P Zero tire options, ranging from 21″ to 23″, catering to varying preferences for comfort and sportiness. Additionally, Scorpion Winter 2 tires are available for colder seasons. All these tire options feature Pirelli Elect technology, specifically developed to enhance the performance characteristics of the first electrified Urus.

The color palette has been significantly expanded, offering over 100 bodywork options. At launch, two new colors are introduced: Arancio Egon (orange), complemented by an interior in Arancio Apodis (orange), and Bianco Sapphirus (white) with an interior in Terra Kedros (terracotta). Interior options encompass an extensive range of 47 color combinations and four types of embroidery (Q-citura stitching), with further customization potential through the Ad Personam program. This program empowers owners to transform their Urus SE into a truly unique masterpiece.

Four Distinct Personas

At the heart of the console lies the “tamburo” selector unit, pivotal for choosing various driving modes. With the integration of the hybrid powertrain, the Urus now boasts six traditional driving modes complemented by four new Electric Performance Strategies (EPS), totaling eleven selectable options. Alongside the familiar Strada, Sport, Corsa (for road and track use), Neve, Sabbia, and Terra modes (for varied grip surfaces), the new lineup includes EV Drive, Hybrid, Performance, and Recharge modes.

EV Drive allows drivers to fully exploit the electric potential, catering particularly to urban environments, offering over 60 km in electric range and speeds exceeding 130 km/h. Hybrid mode, selectable in Strada, optimizes efficiency and comfort by striking the ideal balance between the combustion engine and electric motor, ideal for everyday driving. Recharge mode, available in various driving modes, swiftly replenishes up to 80% of the battery without compromising performance. Performance mode unlocks the Lamborghini Urus SE’s full potential across a range of driving scenarios, showcasing its dynamic prowess on various surfaces.

Ground clearance adjusts dynamically based on the selected driving mode, ranging from 15 mm in Corsa to 75 mm with the lifting system activated. Steering, drivability, and the twin-turbo V8’s sound adapt to each mode, shaping the Urus SE’s distinct persona.

Significant effort has been invested in calibrating the air suspension system to amplify the characteristics of each driving mode. Strada mode prioritizes comfort, while Sport mode enhances driving enjoyment, facilitating controlled drifts. Corsa mode unleashes the Urus SE’s dynamic capabilities on the track, ensuring stability and responsiveness. Neve, Sabbia, and Terra modes are fine-tuned to optimize traction across various surfaces, maximizing wheel travel and ground force consistency.
