The future of compact adventure vehicles has arrived. At AutoMobility LA 2025, Hyundai Motor America unveiled the CRATER Concept, a rugged off-road SUV that redefines versatility and emotional design.
Conceived at the Hyundai America Technical Center (HATCI) in Irvine, California, the CRATER Concept isn’t just a show car; it is a rolling laboratory exploring the limits of the “XRT” spirit found in models like the IONIQ 5 XRT and Palisade XRT Pro.
“CRATER began with a question: ‘What does freedom look like?’ This vehicle stands as our answer. It is a vision shaped by our unending drive to explore — to inspire our customers to explore deeper and embrace the impact of adventure.” — SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design.

Exterior Design: The “Art of Steel”
The CRATER Concept introduces a new exterior design language dubbed “Art of Steel”. Inspired by extreme environments and Hyundai’s advanced steel technologies, the design transforms the rigid strength of steel into a flow of sculptural beauty.
The “Impact of Adventure” Theme
Every chiseled bodyside and bold line on the CRATER Concept is designed to visually communicate resilience and purpose. Built on a compact monocoque architecture, the vehicle features a bold silhouette with steep approach and departure angles, ensuring it is ready for serious off-road exploration.
Technical Exterior Highlights
- Hexagonal Faceted Wheels: The 18-inch wheels are designed to look like a hexagonal asteroid impacted a metal landscape, leaving a “fractal crater”.
- 33-Inch Off-Road Tires: These generous tires provide superior traction and ground clearance for all environments.
- Wide Skid Plate: A functional plate stretches across the underbody, visually anchoring the vehicle while offering robust protection.
- Sheer Fender Design: Wide, prominent shoulders emphasize a robotic, sculptural character, reinforcing a planted stance.
- Limb Risers: Cables stretching from the hood to the roof protect the windshield from low-hanging branches on overgrown trails.
- Roof Platform: A dedicated mounting point for auxiliary lighting and extra gear storage.
Lighting Signature
The CRATER Concept utilizes a Parametric Pixel theme. The lighting is three-dimensional and layered, with indirect lighting softly illuminating surrounding surfaces. The auxiliary lights on the roof also feature a gradient version of this pixel theme.
Hidden “Gems” and Utility
Hyundai has packed the exterior with multi-functional tools:
- Recovery Hooks: One of the built-in hooks doubles as a bottle opener.
- Detachable Camera Mirrors: The side-mirror cameras function as flashlights and can be removed to record adventures or use in emergencies.

Interior: “The Curve of Upholstery”
The cabin is designed for the tech-savvy adventurer, blending technical shapes with soft, durable materials. The design theme, “The Curve of Upholstery,” creates a space that is tough yet warm.
Rugged Technology & Cockpit
- BYOD Interface: The vehicle uses a “Bring Your Own Device” approach, allowing for a customizable digital experience that adapts to user preferences.
- Dynamic Head-Up Display (HUD): A full-width display that includes a novel rearview camera mirror feed.
- Steering Wheel: A squared-off design features a center-mounted pixel display and integrated terrain mode buttons.
- Crash Pad: Shaped like a bent metal sheet, the dashboard features subtle perforations that allow soft ambient light to glow through.
Structural Safety & Seating
Safety is woven into the aesthetic. A functional roll cage outlines the cabin, providing structural tension and grab handles for easier entry.
- Seats: Wraparound forms with cylindrical cushions and 3D padding replace traditional bucket seats.
- Restraints: A four-point seatbelt system suggests enhanced safety for extreme off-roading.

Off-Road Capability & Specs
The CRATER Concept is built to tackle the toughest terrain. It features a tactile, gear-type Off-Road Controller for managing differentials and traction.
- Terrain Modes: Snow, Sand, Mud, Auto, XRT
- Differentials: Front and Rear Locking Differentials
- Braking: Downhill Brake Control & Trailer Brake Control
- Instruments: Integrated Compass and Altimeter
Colors, Materials, and “Crater Man”
The vehicle’s aesthetic is deeply rooted in California’s landscape.
- Exterior Color: Dune Gold Matte, inspired by sun-faded sagebrush and golden grasses found in California coastal terrains.
- Interior Colors: Black Ember leather and Alcantara create a base that hides dirt and grit, designed to patina like a well-worn jacket.
- Accents: Pops of Anodized Orange and brushed metal add industrial toughness and energy. Topographic patterns are etched into select surfaces.
The “Crater Man”: A symbolic character named CRATER MAN is hidden throughout the vehicle, offering playful storytelling and interactive design elements for the driver to discover.
Additional Interior Equipment
- Passenger Side: First aid kit.
- Driver Side: Fire extinguisher.
- Audio: Removable Bluetooth center console main speaker.
- Controls: Cylinder-type center controls mechanically linked to visual indicator lights.
