All-New 9th Gen Toyota Hilux Goes Electric, Hybrid, and Beyond

For more than half a century, the Toyota Hilux has carried a reputation most trucks can only dream of: indestructibility. It has conquered deserts, jungles, warzones, farms, mountains and every kind of road (and non-road) in between. Now, Toyota is taking the Hilux somewhere entirely new, without losing the DNA that made it a legend.

The all-new 9th generation Toyota Hilux marks perhaps the most dramatic evolution in the model’s history. This isn’t simply a refresh. It’s a redefinition of what a pickup truck can be in a world that demands versatility, capability and sustainability in equal measure.

Toyota Hilux BEV 2026 Charging

A Hilux for Every World

Toyota has doubled down on its multipath powertrain strategy, acknowledging that not every driver, region or use case has the same requirements. Instead of forcing a one-size solution onto global markets, the new Hilux lineup offers multiple power options, each built around the same core principles of Quality, Durability and Reliability.

The new lineup includes:

PowertrainTarget MarketsKey Advantage
Battery Electric (BEV)Western EuropeZero-emission capability without compromising toughness
Hybrid 48VGlobalEfficiency and refinement for everyday driving and rugged use
Diesel & Petrol EnginesEastern European marketsProven power for demanding working conditions
Hydrogen Fuel Cell (arriving 2028)GlobalClean energy future with long-range potential

The First-Ever Electric Hilux (BEV)

This is the one that changes the game. Toyota has officially unwrapped the Hilux BEV, the first-ever fully electric version of the legend.

This isn’t some watered-down city truck, either. Toyota is adamant it retains the model’s renowned Quality, Durability, and Reliability (QDR). It’s built on the fundamental body-on-frame construction and features dual eAxles (one front, one rear) for permanent all-wheel drive. Crucially, it’s engineered for real work, with specific battery protection and a wading depth equal to the combustion models.

  • Powertrain: 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery.
  • Power: 205 Nm of torque at the front, 268.6 Nm at the rear.
  • Range: Approximately 240 km (WLTP).
  • Capacity: Tentative figures suggest a 715 kg payload and 1,600 kg towing capacity.
  • Off-Road Tech: Includes a Multi-Terrain Select system for advanced off-road capability.

Aimed squarely at fleet customers and those needing zero-emission practicality , the BEV also gets unique styling, including an aero-treated front end (no traditional grille) and dedicated alloy wheels.

Hilux Hybrid 48V: The Mainstream

While the BEV grabs headlines, this is the model Toyota expects to be the volume-seller in Western Europe. The Hilux Hybrid 48V pairs the muscular 2.8-litre engine with Toyota’s proven hybrid tech.

This system uses a 48V lithium-ion battery (tucked under the rear seats, so no loss of cabin space ) and a small motor-generator. The result? Smoother, quieter performance, especially at start-off and during acceleration.

But here’s the kicker: it sacrifices nothing in capability.

  • Payload: Up to 1 tonne.
  • Towing: A full 3,500 kg (braked).
  • Wading Depth: A massive 700 mm, as the motor is mounted high on the engine.

This is the true all-rounder: retaining the monstrous work-ready stats while adding a layer of modern refinement and efficiency. It also gets the advanced Multi-Terrain Select system.

The Other Paths: ICE and Hydrogen

Toyota’s “multipath” strategy means no one is left behind.

Internal Combustion (ICE): For Toyota’s Eastern European markets, the Hilux will continue to offer traditional diesel and petrol engines. The range will be simplified and upgraded, with the powerful 2.8-litre diesel replacing the old 2.4-litre, alongside the 2.7-litre petrol engine.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell (FCEV): Looking further ahead, Toyota has confirmed a hydrogen-powered Hilux is scheduled to arrive in 2028. This doubles down on their commitment to hydrogen as a key clean energy source.

Land Cruiser-Inspired Tech and “Tough-Agile” Design

The ninth-gen Hilux doesn’t just get new power; it gets a whole new presence, heavily inspired by the new Land Cruiser.

Exterior:

  • The design theme is “Tough and Agile,” projecting a powerful, planted stance.
  • The front end is dominated by slim new headlights linked by a central bar featuring the classic “TOYOTA” name.
  • In a major move, the Hilux will now be offered exclusively as a Double Cab, reflecting clear customer preference.

Interior & Tech: Inside, the Land Cruiser’s influence is unmistakable. The cabin has been given an all-around elevation in “sensory quality”.

  • All-Digital Cockpit: The old gauges are out, replaced by a 12.3-inch customisable driver’s display and a massive 12.3-inch central multimedia touchscreen.
  • Electric Power Steering: This is a huge update. For the first time (in Western Europe), the Hilux gets EPS. This means easier manoeuvrability and less kick-back over rough terrain.
  • Smarter Controls: Off-road controls are now centrally grouped , and the BEV model gets a slick shift-by-wire selector.
  • Connected Services: The MyToyota app allows for remote services, and fleet managers can track location, fuel/charge status, and driving analytics for up to 10 vehicles.

A New Level of Safety

The Hilux also gets a significant extension of its Toyota T-Mate safety package. The Toyota Safety Sense system is upgraded with new features like:

  • Low Speed Acceleration Suppression
  • Proactive Driving Assist
  • Emergency Driving Stop
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Safe Exit Assist
  • Driver Monitor Camera

The truck will also receive seamless over-the-air (OTA) updates to keep its systems current. Remote vehicle insights via the MyToyota app also streamline commercial fleet management and private connected services.

Final Thoughts

The new Hilux doesn’t chase trends. It builds a future-proofed lineup that respects the past while stepping into the next era of mobility. Whether electric, hybrid, diesel or hydrogen, this is still a Hilux through and through: dependable, capable and ready for real work.

The legend continues. Just more intelligently than ever.
