Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition Unveiled – The End That Tells The Whole Story

Ducati Motor Holding has unveiled an exclusive bike – The Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition which was designed as a tribute to the legendary twin-cylinder engine that has made Ducati history and written the World Superbike Championship record books. From the first win in World Superbikes with Marco Lucchinelli, onboard the 851 on the 3rd of April, 1988, to 2017 with victories by Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri, twin cylinder engines from Borgo Panigale have been at the forefront of racing.

Over the last three decades, Ducati four valve per cylinder twins have evolved and have featured on some of the most iconic motorcycles in racing, winning over 330 races in the World Superbike championship. From the 851 to the Panigale R, the heritage of Ducati twins passes through the 888, 916, 996, 998, 999, 1098, 1198 and 1199, both on the market and on the race track.

For the world preview of the unique motorcycle, the company chose the round eight of the World Superbike Championship at Laguna Seca, in California, where Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, unveiled the new Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition together with Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri who are the two official Aruba.it Racing- Ducati riders.

On the occasion of the unveiling of the super bike, Claudio Domenicali said, “I’m incredibly proud to present this latest version of our Panigale. Maybe no other motorcycle manufacturer has bound its name so tightly to an engine as Ducati has to its sports twin-cylinder. We’re here to celebrate its history, just as we stand on the cusp of a new era in which our desmodromic system will be used on a new generation of V4 engines derived from extensive experience in MotoGP, a championship in which our engine has demonstrated outstanding performance. But that’s the future.”

“Today, we want to pay homage to a twin-cylinder engine that – thanks to incredible torque and compactness – has seen Ducati win races in every SBK championship it has ever participated in. In short, it’s the engine that has written World Superbike history. From Marco Lucchinelli’s first victory on 3rd April 1988 with the 851 at Donington Park (in the first-ever world championship for modified production models) to the stunning 2017 wins by Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri on the Panigale R, Ducati has won no less than 333 races and taken 17 Constructors’ titles and 14 Rider’s titles”, added Mr. Domenicali

The Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition is not just a bike with a dedicated colour scheme or a limited edition, it is much more than that. It is the end that tells the whole story. The special edition superbike is a fully street legal, Euro 4 homologated motorcycle that is a perfect mix of a super-powerful engine and a race-derived chassis.

Each Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition will be individually numbered but not limited in quantity. The bike offers unparalleled technology, performance and design. The super bike will adorn an all-new tricolour livery which along with the red rims and titanium exhaust make it a unique, collectable bike.

Powering this latest built-in-Bologna gem is the Final Edition Superquadro which is an offshoot of the 1299 Superleggera engine. The motor produces 209 hp of power at 11,000 rpm and a torque of 14.5 kgm (152 Nm) at 9,000 rpm. It features a lighter crankshaft with a larger crank pin and tungsten balancing pads. The intake-exhaust valves and the connecting rods are made of titanium. Similar to the engines of superbikes, the two 116 mm diameter pistons have just two segments and slide on steel cylinder liners.

The engine on this super bike is mated to a 6-speed transmission with Ducati Quick Shift up/down (DQS). The DQS is a race-derived electronic system that manages shifting of the gearbox in both up and down directions. It allows upshifts to be made under full acceleration without using the clutch. It also allows clutchless downshifts, as the system performs a perfectly-timed auto-blip when the foot lever is depressed.

The ultra-compact monocoque structure that was developed by Ducati Corse incorporates the airbox and plays a pivotal role in containing the dry weight of the Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition to just 168 kg. The chassis set-up on this latest Ducati Supersport is the same as that on the Panigale R and is equipped with Ohlins suspension including an NIX30 fork, TTX36 shock and steering damper, all fully manually adjustable. The motorcycle uses a 24-degree steering head angle along with a low swingarm pivot point. This enhances the bike’s agility and provides excellent rear traction in a wide variety of conditions.

Stopping power for the exclusive superbike comes from dual 330 mm semi-floating discs with Brembo’s M50 Monoblock callipers at the front and a 245 mm disc at the rear. The Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition is also equipped with a lightweight all-titanium Akrapovic exhaust with high dual silencer replicates the look of the Panigale R that competes in the World Superbike championship.

The Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition also features Ducati’s Riding Modes which instantly varies the key characteristics of the bike to suit different conditions or preferences. The rider can select from three pre-set configurations – Race, Sport, and Wet, using the buttons mounted on the handlebar.

Sergi Canovas, Managing Director of Ducati India Pvt. Ltd. said, “We recently delivered the super exclusive limited edition 1299 Superleggera in India and now we’re proud to launch the 1299 Panigale R Final Edition for superbike enthusiasts. A tribute to the great heritage of Ducati superbikes, the special livery and top-of-the-line components create a thrilling riding experience and unique visual appeal.”
