The new Porsche Panamera is an amalgamation of two clashing qualities – the performance of a sports car and the comfort of a luxury sedan. In its second generation, the Panamera has been redeveloped down to every last detail. The updates to its engine, transmission, chassis and overall design make it a performance icon in the luxury saloon class.

The 2017 Porsche Panamera Turbo has earned the title of the fastest luxury sedan on earth after clocking a time of 7 minutes, 38 seconds around the Nurburgring race course.

Speaking at the event, Pavan Shetty, Director Porsche India, said, “In the new Panamera, our customers and enthusiasts will experience a fundamentally redesigned car with new turbo engines, sharper exterior design, intuitive interior features and innovative technologies. The Turbo model launched here today is more powerful than its predecessor, whilst also significantly improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. As a result, this four-door saloon is a unique offering and an embodiment of comfort, performance, luxury presented in the most beautiful form. The enhancements applied to the new Panamera make it a true segment leader, one that I am sure will be well received here in India.

The reworked exterior clearly takes up the design language from the current Porsche 911. It is based on very dynamic proportions and despite the small increase in height, the four-door car looks much lower and longer. The new 2017 Porsche Panamera is now 34 mm longer 6 mm wider and 5 mm taller than its predecessor. The wheelbase has been increased by 30 mm and the front wheels are shifted further forward to shorten the front overhang. The rear overhang is longer, giving the car a more powerful character.

The A-shaped air intake, which spreads out to the sides and a precisely designed crossbar in the radiator grille emphasises the car’s width. The lower front end was made possible by the new compact construction of the engines. The powerdome lines now reach into the bumper and the bonnet blends precisely into the stronger flares of the front wings – a typical Porsche design attribute. Also exuding confidence is the appearance of the LED headlights with their four-point LED daytime running lights.

The new side body highlights the silhouette of a sports car more than ever thanks to its dynamic roof line. At the rear end, this roof line converts into the charismatic Porsche flyline – the peculiar lines that grace all of the brand’s coupes. The appearance of the side windows has also been redesigned which produces a stylistic resemblance to the Porsche 911. The large arches provide space for the 20-inch alloy wheels which can be further upgraded to 21-inch wheels.

The broad shoulder sections lend the Panamera a very sporty look. The unique three-dimensional LED rear lights with integrated four-point brake lights are connected by a narrow LED strip. The extendable rear spoiler now finished in body colour is incorporated seamlessly and elegantly into the boot which features electric opening and closing as standard. On the Panamera Turbo, the wing splits as it extends, thereby gaining additional surface area. Dual trapezoidal stainless steel tailpipes are embodied in the rear diffuser on either side.

The 2017 Panamera introduces a radically new interior design. The digitalisation of the Porsche interior, which began with the 918 Spyder, has reached the next development stage aboard the Panamera in the form of the modern Porsche Advanced Cockpit.

The driver is provided with two 7-inch displays that are placed directly in the line of sight for ideal ergonomics. Located in the middle of these two displays is the tachometer, which is still an analogue instrument and is a tribute to the 1955 Porsche 356 A. The gearshift console between the driver and the front passenger is dominated by the 12.3-inch touchscreen of the next generation Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system.

The driver and front passenger can configure this display separately. Features such as online navigation, the online functions of Porsche Connect, smartphone integration via Apple Car Play and a new voice control system that responds to natural language input are integrated into the PCM. A new control panel with touch-sensitive switches on the centre console enables intuitive control of various functions. Even the louvres of the central air vent are electrically adjusted by touch-sensitive sliders. The sports sedan is also practical for everyday use. It features a 40:20:40 split of the folding rear bench backrests which allow to increase the luggage capacity from 495 to 1304 litres.

The Panamera Turbo Executive is equipped with various standard features, including a large panoramic roof, comfort seats with multi-way electrical adjustment in the front and rear and roll-up sunblinds behind the headrests in the rear. It also offers four-zone climate control and ambient lighting as standard.

For enhanced comfort in the rear, customers can choose from a range of optional equipment, such as the large rear centre console, which can further be equipped with two integrated folding tables. The latest generation of Porsche Rear Seat Entertainment is available, with the 10.1-inch displays integrated into the backrests of the front seats and can be removed to be used as tablets outside of the vehicle.

The engine of the Porsche Panamera Turbo has been reengineered to generate more power, while significantly improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. The Panamera Turbo is powered by a new 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 petrol engine. This motor develops 550 hp at 5,750 rpm which is 30 hp more than its predecessor. A maximum torque of 770 Nm between 1,960 and 4,500 rpm is created which is an increase of 70 Nm compared to the previous model.

The 2017 Porsche Panamera Turbo can accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds while it can do the same in 3.6 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package. The new turbo model s a top speed of 306 km/h and a power-to-weight ratio of just 3.6 kg/hp.

Equipped with the brand’s first eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission enables an even better gear ratio spread along with a reduction in fuel consumption. The vehicle reaches its top speed in sixth gear because the seventh and eighth gears are designed as engine speed-reducing overdrive gears.

Engine response can be further increased using the optional Mode Switch with the Sport Response Button which was first introduced in the Porsche 918 Spyder. The Mode Switch can be used to activate one of four driving modes – Normal, Sport, Sport Plus or Individual. Located in the centre of the switch is the Sport Response Button that can be used to unleash the maximum power potential of the Panamera at the press of a button.

All this enormous amount of power is transferred to the road via Porsche Traction Management (PTM) – a permanent, fully variable all-wheel drive system. Tuned to the specific driving situation, PTM sensors continuously monitor wheel speeds and perfect performance on dry roads as well as in wet conditions.

In continuing with the concept of the Panamera, the chassis combines the cruising comfort of a luxury saloon with the performance of a true sports car. This is acheived by utilising innovative systems such as an adaptive air suspension with new three-chamber technology and Porsche Active Suspension Management (electronic damper control), Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport system including Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, as well as a new electromechanical steering system.

The integrated 4D Chassis Control system on the 2017 Porsche Panamera Turbo evaluates and synchronises all chassis systems in real time for even better handling. The braking performance has also been improved. Porsche is also offering the rear axle steering system adapted from the 918 Spyder and 911 Turbo to its Panamera range.

Porsche India’s current portfolio includes the iconic 911, Macan, Cayenne, 718 Boxster, 718 Cayman and Panamera Turbo. The German sports car maker is likely to introduce the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, including a long-wheel base version, as well as the Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo in future to the Indian market.
